Save
your precious photos
before it's too late!
They are irreplaceable. They are your
history, your memories, and part of your family's heritage for the next
generations. You may believe only disasters like fire or flood are a threat
to them. You assume they are fine, safely tucked away in albums and boxes.
They may not be safe at all.
Harm
to your precious photographs can be caused by acids in the very boxes,
paper, albums, plastic sleeves (vinyl) and even frames that you believe
are protecting them. Damage is also caused by humidity and alternating
extremes of heat and cold in the location where they are stored, such
as an attic or basement.
I
learned
this the hard way and lost some of my prized photos. Even a lot of the
pictures I didn't lose totally are in various states of damage.
I have been
taking photos since I was a kid and now, several cameras and thousands
of photos later, I have boxes and boxes full of memories. I treasure them
all, the good ones as well as the bad ones. I had always thought they
were safe, some in albums and some not, as long as I kept them high and
dry. I valued these photographs so much and though I was taking very good
care of them.
I was wrong.
Over time, I noticed that some of the photos appeared to be fading and
discoloring. I realized that if I didn't take action I would lose some
of them. Still, I was busy with day to day activities and I kept meaning
to get to it one of these days. Unfortunately they continued to deteriorate
while I wasn't looking.
